Message of Vice President Jejomar C. Binay for the 27th APO National Biennial Convention
A pleasant day to my beloved brothers and sisters at the Alpha Phi Omega.
We have just recently held the midterm elections, and I suppose congratulations are in order for our brods and sisses who have earned the people’s mandate to lead. While many have criticized the way the elections were done, I believe that now is the time to move on and unite as we pursue our shared objectives of large scale and inclusive development.
All of you are aware that elections are one of the most divisive periods in our nation. The divisions and conflicts that this democratic exercise provokes, many contend, is compounded by its regularity. That is, the whole nation has to undergo the process every three years.
Our convention’s theme, “Together as one, rooted and grounded in service” should serve as an admonition for us of our responsibility as public leaders, and as members of the electorate.
Today is the time for mending the damages wrought by those who refuse to veer away from the old and malignant practices-the bad side of elections such as vote-buying, mudslinging, widespread cheating.
Today is the time to move on from past hurts; to atone for committed mistakes and to vigilantly temper ourselves to prevent from making new ones.
Most importantly, today is the time to heal a nation that has suffered from decades of corruption, corruption that has seeped to the core of our people so that until now we remain crippled.
We Aphions have always aspired to join in nation-building through selfless service.
As we embark on this journey of healing our nation, I trust that Aphios will lead the way in serving the people, particularly in educating and inspiring the poor and underprivileged to strive to be better.
Definitely, in doing so, there is the underlying discourse of providing the avenues for the poor to be able to rise above their sad circumstances. In addressing this issue, I am confident that our brothers and sisters in the public and private sectors, as well as in the non-government organizations, shall take on the burden of introducing reforms and innovations that will ensure that our highly touted economic gains are felt by the poor who are the critical mass of our society.
As we also undergo a change in leadership in our own ranks, I pray that these thoughts will be foremost in our minds.
To our newly elected leaders, congratulations in advance, and may you surpass, if not equal, the sterling accomplishments of your predecessors.
Thank you. Mabuhay kayo!
