Congratulations to Bro. Ruffy Ignacio (Eta Chapter 1960)
In Dec. 2014, Bro. Ruffy Ignacio received the UP College of Engineering, and the UP Alumni Engineers Award for Global Achievement for Engineering Consultancy. This year, it is the UP Alumni Association Lifetime Achievement Award!
Bro. Rufino S. Ignacio (Eta Chapter 1960) brings honor and distinction to APO, as a past President of the Greater Washington APO (GWAPO), past Alumni GC and President of Eta Chapter Alumni Association of North America (ETAANA). Past SEAFDEC pioneer and 10-year President of the Filipino American Community of South Puget Sound (FACSPS) in Olympia, Washington, Bro. Ruffy was Dean of the College of Engineering and Executive Vice President of the Mindanao State University in Marawi City a few years after having garnered the #3 spot in the Electrical Engineering Board Exams. He is currently Dean Emeritus of Engineering at MSU.
In the field of sports, he was past Manager of several PBA teams such as Country Fair Hotdogs, and Manager of several Jones Cup teams. He has sponsored several Philippine girls softball teams that played in the World League championships in Kirkland, Washington. He is currently Secretary General of the PBA Legends USA Foundation.
In the field of arts and culture, he founded the nationally-acclaimed Sining Kambayoka Ensemble (SKE) of the MSU and was instrumental in sponsoring the US tours of such groups as the Philippine Ballet Theater, the De La Salle University Chorale, the Integrated Performing Arts Group (IPAG) of MSU-IIT, among many others. He is Vice President of the Filipino Cultural Heritage Society of Washington (FCHSW) that serves as coordinator for the 29th annual pagdiriwang Philippine festival in Seattle Center.
He is an author of an engineering project management book and was the first Asian to become Worshipful Master of the F&AM Olympia Lodge No. 1 that produced many of Washington’s Governors, legislators and other leaders; he managed the lodge’s real property and business assets of about $25 Million.
He spends five months of the year as visiting scientist/lecturer in engineering and as consultant to the MSU President. His current project involves 54 infrastructure projects in Mindanao to upgrade MSU facilities worth about PhP2 Billion. Bro. Ruffy Ignacio is now ensconced in the history of 2 venerated state universities in the Philippines – UP and MSU.
ETA stands for Excellence and Bro. Ruffy has exhibited such excellence in a wide field of endeavor – academic, arts, culture, community organizing, sports, food production, aquaculture etc. CONGRATULATIONS BRO. RUFFY IGNACIO FOR CARRYING ON THE ETA TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE!
Top UP alumnus is Nat’l Scientist, RM awardee

The University of the Philippines Alumni Association (UPAA) has announced the choices for this year’s Distinguished Alumni Awardees. They will be recognized at the UP general alumni homecoming on June 20, beginning at 3 p.m., at Luciano E. Salazar Hall of Ang Bahay ng Alumni, UP Diliman campus. The awards are conferred on UP alumni who have demonstrated, in their chosen fields of endeavor, extraordinary achievements and excellent contributions that bring about substantial benefits to society and distinct honor to the university. Recognition is given for achievements and contributions at the local, national or international level.
This year’s Most Distinguished Alumnus is National Scientist Ernesto O. Domingo, professor emeritus of the UP College of Medicine and Ramon Magsaysay (RM) Awardee for Medicine in 2013.
Six alumni are being recognized for lifetime achievement: Dr. Benjamin D. Adapon, Celia Diaz-Laurel, Dr. Florante P. Gonzaga, Rufino S. Ignacio (Eta 1960), Dr. Reynaldo O. Joson and Cayetano D.L. Santiago.
“The UPAA makes a special effort to identify unsung alumni achievers—those whose accomplishments in little-known corners of the country and of the world are remarkable but have remained unheralded and unrecognized,” said regent Ponciano E. Rivera Jr., UPAA president.

The five UPAA Distinguished Service Awardees are Marquez O. Go, Dr. Irma R. Makalinao, Rodrigo Angelo C. Ong, Eli M. Remolona and Dr. Cirilo R. Reyes Jr. The UP Pharmacy Alumni Association and UP Vanguard Corps of Sponsors Alumni International will receive this year’s UPAA Distinguished Service Award for An Alumni Chapter.
